The Struggle

The night before Thanksgiving 2013, underneath the crosses at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis TN, my Dad delivered some news to my sister and I that would change our lives. "I have cancer," my Dad said with tears in his eyes. My sister automatically began to sob and gasp while I stood there too shocked to feel anything at that moment.

My father at DX in 2013 after a routine colonoscopy.

My Dad was able to navigate through his first journey through cancer in 2013 - 2014 with a peace and dignity I have never witnessed before.  He had never been closer to God and used his illness to witness to others. He endured months of the most intense chemo which was supposed to drastically reduce the possibility of the cancer returning. Dad finished his treatment in July of 2014. It took him several more months to recover from the treatments and go back to work.

Unfortunately, in January 2016,  Dad beat the odds in an unexpected way. His cancer returned for a second time, despite the 90% chance that it would not return. This trip is dedicated to him and many other individuals who fight to beat colon cancer.
